A Girl With Brains

This isn’t how I thought it would end, you know? The world? With Billionaire Nazis funding a broligarchy, criminals pardoned and let free while children are locked up in Guantanamo, and planes dropping out of the sky like flaming autumnal leaves.

No. I thought it’d be zombies. Seriously. I thought I’d be holed up in an army base or a pub with my best friends, their partners, and some weird random guy we found along the way who saved our lives with an ice cream scoop or something.

When we heard the odds had increased that a huge asteroid was going to collide with earth, nobody around me said “well at least we have a few years to train some oil rig drillers to be astronauts.” No, we nodded and agreed it was probably for the best at this point.

The end won’t be from an epic natural disaster that somehow involves skyscraper tumbling waves, rivers of lava, canyon sized cracks from earthquakes and freezing temperatures we could hide from in an old library, burning books to stay alive. It’s already started.

I didn’t think the burning books part would come first. I didn’t think politicians were watching The Handmaid’s Tale and thinking “you know, its a good starting point”. I didn’t think the threat would come from us. I underestimated how much some people can just hate others, fear what’s different. Fear that they’re not so different.

I’d prefer if it were zombies. At least zombies appreciate a girl with brains.
